On Saturday 21 March 2009, over 4,000 people demonstrated their enthusiasm for and interest in Greater Manchester’s history as they attending the first MHF in Manchester’s Town Hall.

The previous day, over 40 schools had exhibited their history projects covering a range of topics supported by MHF.

Headlining the day was a packed programme of inspring talks from top historians including broadcasters Michael Wood and Tristram Hunt, Hacienda DJ Dave Haslam, academic Sheila Rowbotham and Manchester Confidential’s Jonathan Schofield.

Over 70 local museums, galleries, cultural institutions, historical societies, community groups and university departments produced fascinating displays across a range of topics in the rich architectural surroundings of Manchester’s Town Hall.

Guided walks covering a plethora of subjects from Joy Division to John Dalton uncovered hidden stories in forgotten locations across the city centre, and throughout the corridors of the Town Hall.

Also included were films from North West Film Archive, a brass band, folk music, a big family sing along, family history sessions, a vintage bus and lots more.
