The Festival is a novel and ambitious partnership between the University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University and the City Council.
We hope the Festival will become a regular event in the Manchester calendar: a tribute to the unique heritage of our city.
The Festival hopes to fulfil a number of aims:
- To bring people together
- To inspire lasting pride in our city
- To be a celebration
- To show that there are many histories of Manchester
- To develop links between Manchester's educational and cultural institutions
- To develop original educational resources
- To stimulate interest in the Manchester's future through a greater understanding of its past
THE FESTIVAL IS A CELEBRATION
The City Council has made available all the public rooms in the Town Hall for Friday 20th and Saturday 21st March 2009. Friday will be a special schools day and Saturday will be open to everyone. We hope that people will have fun and that the many activities create a celebratory atmosphere. To find out what's on offer see our activities page.
THE FESTIVAL IS FOR EVERYONE
We hope that individuals and groups of all ages and levels of expertise will get involved - from school groups to major museums, from community groups to universities, from history and music buffs to casual visitors wanting to know more about the city. In other words, the festival is for anyone who cares about Manchester.
BEFORE THE FESTIVAL: Education and Research PROJECTS
A wide-ranging series of projects will be organised over the preceding year involving schools, cultural institutions, universities and their students, societies, and local groups. We hope that as a result of the festival lasting links between these groups will be made. For more information on our projects see our schools and colleges page.
AFTER THE FESTIVAL: IMPACT AND LEGACY
The festival will be internationally outstanding, and its impact could be large, in both volume of visitors and press interest. We expect many of the networks developed to continue. We hope to maintain our website as a resource for schools, societies, institutions and individuals -- and towards future Festivals.
