Manchester Histories Festival - 24 February - 4 March 2012

Forgotten Fields - Levenshulme

A Forgotten Fields presentation, illustrating the history of food production , near the Highfield Park and Cringle Fields area of Levenshulme, finding out about the original farmers, market gardeners and present day growers.

This work is part of the Kindling Trust’s(www.kindling.org.uk) wider Forgotten Fields project, and is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, to explore the production, cultivation and availability, of locally produced food in Greater Manchester from 1750 to the present day.

The project worked with children of Levenshulme High School to interview local residents about their memories or knowledge of local food production, cultivation or availability in the area.

Topics included the indigenous wildlife and soil conditions, tithe maps and census details showing the local farming families, interviews with the families of local growers from the 19 th century, wartime growing, allotment and orchard history and the availability of local, organic food today.
