Forgotten Fields - Tameside

The Food Heritage of Ashton Moss

This exhibition of work is part of the Kindling Trust’s wider Forgotten Fields project, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, to explore the production, cultivation and availability, of locally produced food in Greater Manchester from 1750 to the present day.

Staff and pupils of Aldwyn Primary School, Audenshaw, worked with local residents (especially Audenshaw Local History Society) to explore the heritage of food production, the cultivation of crops and the selling of produce on Ashton Moss, Audenshaw, Tameside.

Topics explored were linked to healthy living and sustainable choices today and included: memories of the indigenous wildlife, drainage of 'The Moss' (bog) into plots, families sustained by growing food on the Moss; cultivation techniques, 'Digging for Victory' during World War Two, the cultural influences e.g. Irish, Italian, Asian communities, on food growing on the Moss and the availability of local food in the area today.
