Open Day at the house where Elizabeth Gaskell, author of Cranford, lived from 1850 until her death in 1865 and where her family lived until 1913 It is a 2* listed, detached villa, with a beautifully restored exterior and the ground floor retaining all its original features, except the fireplaces,
There are displays on the life and work of Elizabeth Gaskell, the history of the house and future plans. There will be talks, slide shows, readings from Mrs Gaskells’ novels and letters, tours and children’s activities. There is also the book-shop, situated in William Gaskells’ study, selling new Gaskell related books and a varied selection of second- hand books. Refreshments, including delicious home-made cakes with tea or coffee will be available.
The Gaskell Society meets regularly at Cross Street Chapel, Manchester and in Knutsford. It holds a biennial conference and visits and holidays to places associated with Elizabeth Gaskell
